Spirits Up, a group of activists working to heal the black community is raising funds to establish a wellness center in Germantown. The Black-centered space will provide a setting for the community to come together.
“The brick and mortar [space] will provide a safe place for practitioners of all fields to come and speak to our community, from herbalists to doulas.” the organization said on their website. “We must remain vigilant for our health and aware of the myriad, systemic ways to keep us unhealthy.”
In mid-June, during protests over the killing of George Floyd, Spirits Up brought a six-day series of yoga and meditation workshops to Philadelphia. The series was to provide a sense of healing to the Black community.
The organization is receiving funds through their GoFundme account. Funds will go towards the wellness center and support yoga training scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to Black residents who do not have the funds to complete yoga training. Spirits Up organizer Sudan Green will be the one of the first recipients of a scholarship.
