GREAT and Attic Brewery teamed up to brew a new beer; Solidarity Shine | Nichole Currie for Gtown Info Hub

A new beer is available at Attic Brewery, and it gives back to the community.

Saturday, March 27, Germantown Residents for Economic Alternatives Together’s Mutual Aid Fund and Attic released a fundraising beer for International Women’s Month named Solidarity Shine.

“It’s delicious,” GREAT member Brenda Littlejohn says. “To me, it has this bubbly taste; it’s fruity smelling. A great spring beer.”

Attic Brewery co-owner Laura Lacy came up with the idea while speaking to a Germantown Mutual Aid Fund member about the work they’ve done for the community.

“I was blown away and proud and inspired by what this group of women were doing,” Lacy says. “And we always look for ways to use our brewery to help either bring attention, raise money, or collect items, for organizations in the neighborhood, to just further show our commitment to, being an active part and an active neighbor.”

GREAT’s Mutual Aid Fund began when the pandemic left neighbors financially insecure and unable to pay bills. The nine women raised more than $100,000 to help Germantown neighbors in need.  They have distributed more than $95,000 to Germantown residents since March

Solidarity Shine is also a collaboration with the Pink Boots Society, an organization to encourage and educate women in the fermented or alcohol beverage industry. Annually, members of Pink Boots receive new hops to brew a beer in honor of women. Pink Boots member Lacy thought it’d be perfect for involving the nine women  of the mutual aid fund.

Mutual Aid Fund Committee Member Brenda Littlejohn says the group has enjoyed helping brew the beer, canning it, nit , and naming it.

“When you think about moonshine, you think about alcohol, but it’s really not moon in the sense of alcohol, but representing the woman,” Littlejohn says. And the solidarity was a given.”

As a poet once said, “The moon is always female,” and so  Local Artist Gina Giles designed the beer can  with a woman surrounded by six moon phases.

Solidarity Shine is available on draft and canned. However you drink it, $1 for every beer is donated to the Germantown Mutual Aid Fund.
