Courtney Childs, a proud Germantown native, has lived and thrived in every corner of the neighborhood throughout her life.

Today, she continues to call it home, staying deeply rooted in her community through her involvement in two exciting local projects: Germantown Art & Sound and Germantown 250. “The work we do inspires me — everyone involved is just brilliant, creative, and talented,” says Courtney, reflecting on the dynamic energy these initiatives bring to the area.

Beyond her community work, Courtney is an enthusiastic foodie and a passionate film lover with a particular interest in scriptwriting and set design. Courtney’s commitment to bringing her ideas to life is clear, whether curating spaces or dreaming up new creative ventures. While she hints at an exciting new project on the horizon, she’s keeping details under wraps — for now.

Childs also owns and operates Our House Culture Center, where she continues to lend space to neighbors, far and near, to contribute to the cultural fabric of her beloved neighborhood and city.

The Germantown Info Hub got to ask Childs about her favorite things about Germantown and she graciously answered.

Favorite place to get food

“I’m a regular at Salaam Cafe,” she says. She suggests more, saying, “And if you haven’t tried the bread pudding at Lily of the Valley, you’re missing out. It’s the best I’ve ever had. Also, shoutout to The Juice Room up in Mt. Airy; that’s my favorite lunch spot.”

Favorite park to frequent

She names Awbury Arboretum for its beauty. She also says she loves sitting in Cliveden Park, which “brings back memories of growing up here.”

Favorite leisure activities

“I’m all about film screening,” she exclaims. “We’ve got so many talented filmmakers right here in Germantown. I also love a good intimate event or pop-up experience.”

Favorite shops

“Yadain and Bargain Thrift make me happy the moment I walk in the door,” she says. “I get my oils and butters from Yadain, and at Bargain Thrift, it’s whatever catches my eye!”

She also encourages neighbors to check out Vera Doyle and see what’s inside!

Suggested historic destination

She suggests that people start with The Johnson House, down the street from her Our House, and The Colored Girls Museum.

Favorite fun fact about the neighborhood

“I’ve worked in real estate for over 20 years; I recently went down a real estate rabbit hole and came across Millionaire’s Row. That’s what they called those big, beautiful houses along Wayne and Tulpehocken back in the 1800s,” she said.

Favorite seasonal activity

She shares that she loves walking in the fall. She says, “The streets of Germantown are gorgeous this time of year,” calling it “a real-life postcard!”

Community group or neighbor shout-out

Childs makes her picks, naming her sister Alicia, saying, “She’s not involved in any community groups, but if you cross paths with her and need something, she’s there to help — quietly and without looking for any recognition. She’s the true definition of a neighbor, and I just love all the Alicias of Germantown!

She also ups Chrissy Watts from Philly Experiences for the way she highlights and loves on Germantown, saying it “brings me so much joy.”

One potential addition to the neighborhood

She says, “I want to see all the things in Germantown — more art installations, more shops, more maker spaces! And For the Love of Germantown, can we please get more restaurants?!”
