New businesses have opened up all around Germantown over the past few months. From secondhand consignment shops to fried delights, there’s a wide variety. Here are some businesses that have made their neighborhood debut in 2022.

Jazzbox
Jazzbox came to the neighborhood in August. It is owned by Doriana Diaz & Mars Santi, two queer women who are Black and Puerto Rican. Jazzbox offers a homestyle collection of events, workshops, coffee, and community care harnessing Black liberatory practices and holistic wellness. Neighbors can also rent the space for events.

Cluck and Gills
The new chicken and seafood spot had its grand opening in September. It is Black-owned and co-owned by Ryan Haywood and Darryl Carter and offers a selection of locally sourced meats, fresh vegetables, and homemade baked goods. Some menu items include chicken tenders, shrimp, and fish. Try their crabby cheese fries, which have real crab meat, homemade cheese sauce, and Old Bay seasoning over freshly-cooked french fries. Cluck and Gills also look to provide youth impacted by the justice system job opportunities.
They are located at 5729 Germantown Avenue, right across from Vernon Park. The eatery is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday through Saturday to midnight, and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Check out www.cluckandgills.com for a full menu and to order ahead for faster pickup, as they are pick-up only.
Ezl Thrift Store
Ezl Thrift Store opened at the beginning of October. They offer secondhand items like tables, chairs, kitchenware, and antiques. While most things are secondary, they sell new bed sheets and mattresses.
The thrift store is at 121 West Chelten Avenue and is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you’re interested in seeing available items, they have some items posted on their Facebook page.
Finally Friday Sunglasses Co.
This Black family-owned business came to the neighborhood at the beginning of the fall season. According to their website, Finally Friday Sunglasses Co. offers “fun selections of the most beautiful and durable sunwear, ensuring exceptional customer service at all times.”
They are located at 6347 Germantown Avenue. The shop is open Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit their website to see their available selections. Call (267) 335-5182 for any questions.
A King’s Cafe
A King’s Cafe follows in the footsteps of many legendary lounges and eateries in the neighborhood, providing a place to gather, eat, and hang out. This new Black-owned restaurant/sports bar has a wide variety of bites like their seafood loaded potato, cheesesteak egg rolls, short rib grilled cheese, and lobster deviled eggs. They also offer cocktails, happy hour (4 p.m. to 7 p.m.) specials, and event hosting.
The lounge sits at 218 West Chelten Avenue. It is open Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. to midnight. Follow @akingscafe218 on Instagram for updates and visit their website for full menu and reservation options.
Black Soul Vintage
This Black woman-owned secondhand consignment shop started bringing the Black soul to the neighborhood in the early summer. Tomarra Sankara-Kilombo’s Black Soul Vintage is a Black-centered second-hand marketplace that intends to uplift the history of African descendants through Black artifacts and inspire an afro-centric lifestyle. They offer everything from books and vinyl records to artwork and furniture.
They are located at 90 East Church Lane, right down the street from Uncle Bobbies and the Lest We Forget Museum. Neighbors can visit blacksoulvintage.com to shop online if they can’t make it into the store and can follow @blacksoulvintage on Instagram to stay connected with updates. They are open Friday, noon to 4 p.m., and Saturday & Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.
